The Golden Gate Bridge spans the Golden Gate, the narrow strait where the waters of San Francisco Bay meet the Pacific Ocean. It links the northern tip of the San Francisco peninsula to Marin County across a channel about a mile wide, a crossing that for generations had been served only by ferries. Opened in 1937, the bridge carries a six-lane roadway, a walkway, and a bicycle path, suspended between two towers that rise 746 feet above the water, with the deck held roughly 220 feet above the tide, high enough for the largest ships to pass beneath.
When it opened, the bridge was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world, and its 4,200-foot main span held the record for the longest between towers until 1964. Beyond the engineering, it became the emblem of San Francisco and, for many people, of California and the wider American West. This archive keeps its record as a place people cross, photograph, and return to, and as the shared work of the engineers, ironworkers, and laborers who built it during the Great Depression.
Proposals to bridge the Golden Gate had circulated for decades, and most engineers judged the crossing impossible. The strait is deep, the tides run hard, and the site is exposed to strong wind and to the fog that pours in from the Pacific. The engineer Joseph Strauss became the project's tireless promoter, first submitting a design in the early 1920s and then spending years persuading local officials, business leaders, and voters that a bridge could be built and paid for. In 1928 the six counties around the bay formed the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District to finance and manage the work.
Funding was the first hard problem, and it grew harder after the stock market crash of 1929. In November 1930, voters in the district approved a $35 million bond issue, pledging their homes, farms, and businesses as security in the depths of the Depression. Even so, the bonds did not sell easily until Amadeo Giannini, founder of the Bank of America, agreed to buy them, in part because he believed the region needed the crossing and the work it would bring. Construction began on 5 January 1933 and continued through the leanest years of the 1930s, when the thousands who applied for jobs on the project far outnumbered the places available.
Building across the strait exacted a human cost, and Strauss was unusually careful about it for his era. He required workers to wear hard hats, ordered the wearing of safety lines and glare-free goggles, and had a large safety net strung beneath the deck along its full length. The net caught nineteen men who fell during construction; they called themselves the Half Way to Hell Club. For most of the job the safety record was remarkable, but on 17 February 1937 a section of scaffold broke loose and tore through the net, killing ten men. Eleven workers died on the project in all, most of them in that single accident. The bridge opened a few months later. On 27 May 1937 the roadway was given over to pedestrians, and an estimated 200,000 people walked, ran, and roller-skated across; vehicles began crossing the following day.
Strauss is remembered as the chief engineer, but he was above all the project's champion and manager, and much of the structural design came from others on his team. Charles Alton Ellis, a professor of engineering, worked out the detailed mathematics of the towers, cables, and roadway, carrying out the long calculations that made the slender design sound. Strauss dismissed him in 1931, and for decades Ellis went largely uncredited; the district formally recognized his central contribution only in 2007. The consulting engineer Leon Moisseiff, who had designed New York's Manhattan Bridge, brought the deflection theory that allowed the deck to be light and flexible rather than heavy and rigid, letting the roadway sway and settle under load instead of resisting it outright.
The finished structure is a suspension bridge of two main cables draped over two steel towers and anchored at each end. Each main cable is about a yard thick and made of 27,572 individual wires spun in place and bound together, with enough wire in the two cables to circle the earth several times over. From these cables, vertical suspender ropes hang down to carry the roadway. The towers, stepped and tapering as they rise, reach 746 feet above the water and were the tallest parts of any bridge in the world when completed. The 4,200-foot main span between the towers set a record that lasted until New York's Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964.
The look of the bridge owes much to the consulting architect Irving Morrow. Working from the engineers' forms, he refined the towers into a clean Art Deco composition, shaped the streetlights and the low pedestrian railings so that drivers keep an open view of the strait, and gave attention to how the structure would read from a distance. His most lasting decision was the color. The steel arrived coated in a reddish-orange primer, and the US Navy proposed painting it with black and yellow stripes for visibility. Morrow argued instead for keeping a warm orange, which he felt suited the surrounding hills and water and remained visible in fog. The result, known as International Orange, has been the bridge's color ever since.
Few modern structures are so bound up with the identity of a place. The Golden Gate Bridge appears on postcards, in films, and in countless photographs as shorthand for San Francisco itself, and its silhouette against fog or sunset is among the most reproduced images in the world. For travelers arriving by sea it long marked the threshold of the city, and for residents it remains a daily crossing as much as a monument. Millions of people visit each year to walk or cycle its span and to see it from the vista points on either shore.
The bridge also carries a more sorrowful history. Over the decades it has been the site of many deaths by suicide, and after long public debate the district built a physical deterrent. A marine-grade stainless-steel net, running the full length of the bridge below the deck and extending out from each side, was completed at the start of 2024. Officials have reported a marked fall in deaths since it was finished. The barrier is recorded here plainly, as part of an honest account of the place and of the effort made to protect the people who cross it.
Keeping the bridge sound is continuous work. A resident crew of ironworkers and painters maintains the steel year round, repairing corrosion and touching up the International Orange coating where salt air and weather wear it away; contrary to a common belief, the bridge is not repainted end to end each year but tended in sections as needed. Between 1982 and 1986 the original concrete roadway was replaced with a lighter deck of welded steel panels, reducing the load on the structure. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake exposed the bridge's vulnerability to strong shaking, the district began a phased seismic retrofit, strengthening the approach viaducts, anchorages, and towers so that the crossing could survive a major quake and reopen quickly. That program has continued across several stages, alongside the addition of movable median barriers and the suicide deterrent system.
The Golden Gate Bridge is open to pedestrians and cyclists as well as to vehicles, and there is no charge to walk or cycle across. A toll is collected from vehicles traveling southbound into San Francisco, charged electronically rather than at a booth. The Bridge Welcome Center on the San Francisco side offers exhibits, a view of the south tower, and a section of original cable, while vista points at both ends and in the Marin Headlands give the classic long views of the span. Fog is common in summer mornings and evenings, and the walkway is exposed and often cold and windy, so warm clothing is wise in any season. The bridge sits within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, close to the Presidio, Fort Point beneath the southern anchorage, and the trails of the Marin Headlands.
